It is perhaps the necessity of some small material mediation amidst the chaos of living, as a point of focus, that fuels Frances Chang’s fascination with song writing - an exercise she considers to be the realization of intentional form. But her interest in form is neither formal nor formulaic. Her songs contain the meandering improvisation of a new-age record, the theatrical romanticism of a crooner ballad, and often stop and start with no reverence to metronomic time.
